BUSH: ARE WE GETTING TO THE BOTTOM YET?

Are we getting near the bottom of W's amorality yet?

Not by a long shot. The through-the-looking-glass media circus, which daily covers up the most blatant Bushite treason and treachery with a sideshow of bread and circus for the masses mingled with conservative propaganda for the right-wing imbeciles, is now helping Republicans to circle the wagons around the most evil bunch of powermongers ever to grab the American presidency.

Now we have to hear about how it was just a few renegade soldiers who did all damage in the Iraqi prisoner camps; no one higher up has any real responsibility. This story will be repeated ad nauseam until the right-wing faithful have it drummed into their heads with all the rest of the pablum that they devour so hungrily from the tyrants they adore so much.

And it was just a few renegade CIA, FBI, and immigration officers who let 9/11 happen; and a few renegade military officials that let returning injured soldiers rot in Georgia; and a few renegade FCC officials that let the mega-media corporations suck up the airways; and a few renegade SEC officers who are trying to water-down the already pathetic anti-Enron measures; and a few renegade EPA officials that are allowing our natural treasures to be pillaged by corporate robber-barons; and a few renegade commanders who blew the Afghanistan operation; and on, and on, and on...

If a Democratic president had committed even ONE of these blunders, there would be no media restraint on the calls for impeachment, on the endless invesitagions, on the red-faced faux indignation of conservative, blow-hard politicians.

But W can lie with impunity.

Here is the latest compilations of W's lies on the Iraqi prisoner scandal from The Daily Mis-Lead

BUSH ADMINISTRATION MISLEADING ON PRISONER ABUSE

In an attempt to quell growing international
controversy last week, President Bush expressed
outrage at the abuse of Iraqi prisoners. He told Arab
television that he thinks "this is a serious matter"
and that "we will fully investigate" (1). However, the
President has yet to answer why no action was taken to
deal with the problem in the last six months --when
the Administration was repeatedly warned of
"widespread" abuse (2).

Specifically, The International Committee of the Red
Cross (ICRC) delivered a confidential report to the
White House earlier this year which "concluded that
abuse of prisoners in Iraq in custody of U.S. military
intelligence was widespread and in some cases
'tantamount to torture" (3). It also charged
coalition forces with "serious violations" of the
Geneva Conventions governing treatment of prisoners of
war violations that may have been encouraged by
Bush's "pre-war decision that the Geneva Conventions
didn't apply" to detainees (4). The Red Cross said it
had been aware of the situation in Abu Ghraib and
"repeatedly asked the U.S. authorities to take
corrective action," but were rebuffed (5).

Even top Administration officials were asking the
White House to address the situation earlier, but were
ignored. The Washington Post reported that "Secretary
of State Colin L. Powell urged action in several White
House meetings that included Rumsfeld" (6). Similarly,
Coalition Provisional Authority chief Paul Bremer
"repeatedly raised the issue of prison conditions as
early as last fall - both in one-on-one meetings with
Rumsfeld and other administration leaders, and in
group meetings with the President's inner circle on
national security" (7). But "the Pentagon repeatedly
failed to act" (8). At the same time, the Red Cross
was told by intelligence officials that the abuse it
witnessed was just "part of the process" (9).

We are nowhere near the bottom of the barrel regarding Bushite immorality. Only intense, focused investigation by the full power of the media will be able to withstand the vicious defensive attacks that will be coming from an administration on the ropes.

Does the press still have it in them? Can they keep at it long enough bring out the truth that will finally reveal, in a way that not even the Republican lie-machine can obfuscate, the moral depravity of W and his whole crew that has been evident to everyone with half a brain since W first stepped onto the political stage?

This is a chance for the press to regain their honor, to return to the glory of their championing common decency against the amoral abuses of the powerful, as they did in revealing the scummy truth about Nixon. And a chance to atone for the toadying subservience they have shown to conservative bullies for the past 25 years.

Are they up to it?

This is their moment of truth.
